Ways to remember a pet who has died

Losing an animal is a real grief, and it deserves a real place to go. In the first days it can help just to have somewhere to put the love that has nowhere to be. Here are some ways people keep a pet close — small and large, and none of them wrong.

Keep something you can hold

A collar, a favourite toy, a tuft of fur in a small tin. You do not have to display it. Knowing it is in a drawer is often enough.

Print the photograph you keep coming back to

There is usually one — the one where they are entirely themselves. Print it properly and put it where you will see it. A screen full of thousands of photos is not the same as one on the shelf.

Write down the small things before they fade

Grief blurs the ordinary details first: the sound of their feet on the floor, the spot they always chose, the way they greeted you. Write a few of them down now. In a year those sentences will be worth more than you expect.

Mark a spot

If they are buried at home, a plant or a small stone gives the grief a direction to walk in. If they were cremated, the same is true of wherever their ashes rest. It does not need to be grand.

Let the people who knew them say something

Pets are loved by more than one person. The neighbour who fed them, the friend who walked them, the kids next door. Giving those people a way to leave a memory turns your grief into something shared, which is lighter to carry.

Make a page that holds the whole story
